History of the Public Works Department (PWD)

The straits Settlement PWD or Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) was first established in 1872 after political changes created the need for a department which specialized in undertaking infrastructural development in the Straits Settlements and Malay States.

PWD was the main agency responsible for implementation projects and infrastructure such as the construction of dams, transportation of clean water to towns, as well as its main role of building and bridges .

Most of the federal roads in Peninsular Malaysia were built before 1957, during the British colonial era. At the time, the British government built roads in order to easily transport good and commodities.

In Sabah, most federal roads were built during the occupation of British North Borneo. On the other hand, no road network systems were developed in Sarawak during the rule of White Rajah Brooke ( Rajah Putih Brooke ).
